288 students erased from GOC registers

The General Optical Council removed a total of 288 student optometrists and dispensing opticians from its registers on Monday.

Their removal has been triggered by the failure to complete the retention process by returning a completed registration application form and paying the retention fee by September 1.

The GOC warned students not on the registers that they are not allowed to continue with their course or pre-registration training or sit an exam until they have re-applied for registration.

The Council added that the relevant education providers and examining bodies are being sent lists of students who have been removed from the registers.

The GOC further warned that any unregistered student who undertakes reserved functions may face prosecution for a criminal offence. The Council also pointed out students who have not been continuously registered may be refused full registration.
